The State of Ohio recently passed House Bill 201 which lowers the age dependents can remain on their parents’ health insurance policies. Previously Ohio allowed children to remain on a parent’s policy until age 28; the new law allows health insurance companies to decrease this to age 26 to match the Affordable Care Act’s dependent age guidelines.
The new law goes into effect on January 1, 2016. This means that any new policies written on or after January 1 cannot cover dependents age 26 or older.
Some companies will begin removing dependents who are age 26 or older once policies begin renewing in January. Others have decided to allow dependents to remain covered until age 28. Be on the lookout for communication from your health insurance provider that will clarify how your specific coverage will respond to this new law.
