Since we’ve just had the unofficial start to summer (along with summer-like temperatures), odds are you will soon be spending time at the pool. While pools are a great source of fun and relaxation, they can also be quite dangerous if proper precautions aren’t taken.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has provided a few tips on how keep everyone in or around your pool safe:
- Install fencing around the perimeter of the pool and use self-closing and self-latching gates.
- Make sure pool covers are in good working order when the pool is not in use and keep the control devices out of the reach of children.
- Consider using a door alarm or pool alarm if your house has direct access to a pool outside.
- If you have an above-ground pool, secure, lock, or remove the ladder when the pool is not in use or surround it with a barrier.
Lastly, never leave children unattended and designate an adult as a “water watcher” whenever children are in the pool. Many pool-related accidents are preventable when the proper steps are taken to ensure everyone’s safety, especially young children.
