Well-known to the Dayton community for his basketball prowess in the 1950’s, William G. Uhl Sr., used his 7-foot frame to become a consensus second-team All-American center for the University of Dayton Flyers in 1956. Originally from Greenfield, Ohio and subsequently earning the nickname “Greenfield Goliath,” William led the Flyers to the NIT championship games in 1955 and 1956, was named to Dayton’s All-Century team during the 2004-04 season, and was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.

After his college career concluded, William founded the Wm. G. Uhl Agency, Inc. as an independent insurance agency in 1958. He grew the agency over the next few decades and soon found his son, Bill Uhl, following in his footsteps by also playing center for the University of Dayton. Upon Bill’s graduation in 1990, he joined the agency and began learning the ropes from his father.

Bill and his business partner Deborah Franz, who first began her career with The Uhl Agency in 1985, purchased the agency from William in 1996 and continued to grow the business, adding insurance company representation as well as additional team members to the staff.

Deborah retired from The Uhl Agency at the end of 2017 and at the start of 2019, two tenured team members – Jon Kreusch (who joined the agency in 2010) and Marc McNulty (who joined the agency in 2000) – became partners in the agency alongside Bill, who currently serves as the agency’s president & CEO.

Today, The Uhl Agency is licensed to write insurance in 30 states and employs 13 full-time team members whose average length of tenure with the agency is over 12 years.

The Uhl Agency was named as one of the Best Places to Work by the Dayton Business Journal from 2010-2012 and was featured as the December 2020 “Agency of the Month” by Rough Notes, a national property and casualty insurance magazine that has been in publication since 1878.
