Stay Safe During Upcoming Winter Weather
Ohio, along with many other Midwest states, are preparing for a large winter storm that will bring heavy snow and considerable amounts of ice. We encourage you to stay home if possible, and if you have to leave the house, drive with caution.
Following are a few steps in order for you to take the proper precautions for the upcoming weather.
-
Stay alert. Continue to monitor local radio stations and media outlets for the latest updates on power outages, water/health advisories, and other important announcements.
-
Keep warm water trickling out of faucets to help prevent them from freezing.
-
If you have a space heater, make sure it has been listed by a qualified testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories. Also, make sure that it is plugged in to an outlet and not an extension cord. Do not ever leave space heaters unattended while in use.
-
If possible, procure extra food and water for use during times when travel outside your home will be difficult or impossible.
If you live in an area where power outages are a potential concern:
-
Keep at least one car outside of the garage. This will allow you to use a car to charge your electronics and devices, but will prevent a potential dangerous carbon monoxide build-up in your garage.
-
Have flashlights available for use as opposed to candles. Candles can get knocked over, increasing the risk of fire. If you need to use a candle, never leave it unattended while it is lit.
